What Do You Need to Elope in Australia?
You don’t need an aisle, a photographer, or even a DJ to get married in Australia! You only need five people: a celebrant, two witnesses, and you two legends! It only takes one month to plan and celebrate a legal-only wedding, and you can get married just about anywhere. Plus, you don’t have to be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia to get married here.
It Only Takes Three Legal Marriage Documents
A legals-only wedding involves signing your marriage documents before two adult witnesses and a registered wedding celebrant. You just have to show up on the day, and you’re good to go as long as two other people hear us say 111 words and the piece of paper has five signatures at the end!
The NOIM (Notice of Intended Marriage)
We have to do this one at least a month BEFORE the wedding. We check birth certificates, passports and IDs to get the ball rolling!
The DONLIM (Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage)
We do this one just before the wedding. It is the confirmation that you two are here to tie the knot!
The OCM (Official Certificate of Marriage)
Do I need to explain this one? It’s the one you sign when you get married. It’s practically a receipt. (Romantic, aren’t I?)
I’ll manage all the paperwork and consult with the Registry of Births, Deaths, and Marriages (BDM) to ensure you’re married. We only have to catch up in person twice: once for the NOIM and then again for the wedding and to sign the required paperwork.
